 UNIT 5: Can You Swim
 Lesson 1 (1, 2)
I. Objectives:
 * By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 + use the words and phrases related to the topic Things we can do
 + Ask and answer question about what someone can/ cannot do.
 - Ss can develop some following competences: 
 + Communicative and collaborative competence: act 1, act 4
 + Problem-solving competence: act 1, act 3
 + Self-studying and self-control competence: act 2, act 3, act 4
 + Problem-solving and creative competence: act 4
 *Language focus: 
 - Vocabulary: can, skip, skate, cook, swim
 - Strucrure: What can you do? − I can ___.
 - Differentiated teaching:
 + Incomplete ss: can ask and answer “What can you do? − I can ___.”
 + Well-completed ss: can listen and read the letters (s and sw) , words (sing and swim) 
 and sentences ( I can sing / I can’t swim)
 II. Materials:
 -Teacher’s: books, pictures, flashcards, CD.
 -Students’: books, notebooks, crayons, pens, boards
III. Method:
 - Communicative Language Teaching
 - Total Physical Response
 - Model- action- talk 
 - Natural Approach
 - 3Ps
 - Work individually, pairwork, groupwork
IV. Teaching activities:
 Activity 1: Warm up 
 - Guessing words: draw, dance, sing, read, play
 + T gives instruction and checks.
 + Ss listen to the instruction and play into 2 groups.
 + T does some action which related to draw, dance, 
 + Ss guess the words and which group has more correct answers will be winner. - Procedure:
 + Point to each character in the picture & elicit his/ her name & the words to fill the gaps.
 + T models a picture (ask and answer)
 + T asks  whole class answer.
 + T ask  s answer.
 + Ss ss (Open pairs) (Good Ss)
 + Ss work in pair in 2 minutes (Close pairs)
 + T call some pairs present.
 + Good Ss will help the below average Ss
 Activity 4: Production
 - Play game: “puppets passing”
 + T gives instruction and checks.
 + Ss listen to the instruction and whole class plays the game.
 + Ss catch the yellow puppet will ask: What can you do?
 + Ss catch the brown puppet will answer: I can _____.
  Consolidation:
 - Content: Review vocabulary and form.
 + Vocabulary: can, skip, skate, cook, swim
 + Structure: What can you do? I can _______.
 - Procedure:
 + ask students to answer the following questions:
 What have you learnt from the lesson today? 
 What are the core values of the lesson? ( if the teacher can take from the lesson). 
 + Praise some ss who are hard working/ active/ good. as well as encourage others 
to try more.
 + Give feedback 
  Homework:
 - Learn by heart the pattern.
 - Drill. * Key: 1a 2c 3c 
 - Procedure:
 + Tell pupils that they are going to listen to three dialogues about someone’s abilities and 
tick the correct pictures.
 + Have pupils look at the pictures to identify the similarities and differences among 
them. Check understanding.
 + Play the recording (twice). 
 + Get pupils to swap their answers before checking as a class. 
 Activity 3: 
 -Content 4: Look and write
 * Key: 1. dance 2. skate 3. swim 4. cycle
 - Procedure:
 + Have Ss read the text in silence.
 + Check comprehension & give feedback.
 + Elicit the words filling the gaps.
 + Allow Ss time to do the task.
 + Get Ss to swap & check their answers before writing the correct answers on the board for 
Ss to copy down.
 + Call some pairs to read aloud

 UNIT 5: Can You Swim
 Lesson 2 (1, 2, 3)
I. Objectives:
 * By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 + use the words and phrases related to the topic Things we can do
 + Ask and answer question about whether someone can do something.
 - Ss can develop some following competences: 
 + Communicative and collaborative competence: act 1, act 4
 + Problem-solving competence: act 1, act 3
 + Self-studying and self-control competence: act 2, act 3, act 4
 + Problem-solving and creative competence: act 4
 *Language focus: 
 - Vocabulary: play table tennis, play volleyball, play the piano, play the guitar.
 - Strucrure: Can you ___? − Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
 - Differentiated teaching:
 + Incomplete Ss: can know and remember some words (play football, play the piano) to talk 
and practice the pattern.
 + Well-completed Ss: can know and remember more words (play football, play the piano, play 
the guitar, play table tennis) to talk and practice the pattern.

 - Play audio again and have students listen and check the answer.

 Procedure:
 - T gives instructions.
 - T asks ss to write the answers to the questons about what the children can do, using the 
pictures cues.
 - Ss do the task independently in 2 minutes.
 - Ss compare their answers with their partner.
 - Call some ss to write their product.
 - T gives feedbacks.

 UNIT 5: Can you swim?
 Lesson 3 (1, 2, 3)
I. Objectives:
 * By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 + use words and phrases related to the topic Thing we can do.
 + pronounce the sounds of the letters s and sw in the words sing and swim respectively.
 + chant “ Can you sing?” well.
 - Ss can develop some following competences: 
 + Communicative and collaborative competence: act 1, act 4
 + Problem-solving competence: act 1, act 2, act 3
 + Self-studying and self-control competence: act 2, act 3, act 4
 + Problem-solving and creative competence: act 4
 *Language focus: 
 - Sound: “ s, sw”
 - Chant: “Can you sing”
 - Differentiated teaching:
 + Incomplete Ss: can pronounce the sounds s and sw in the words sing and swim and chant “Can 
you sing”
 + Well-completed Ss: can pronounce the sounds s and sw in the words sing and swim and chant 
“Can you sing”
