 Lesson 1 – Period 1 
I. OBJECTIVES
Language By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able:
knowledge & - To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative 
skills contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about what subjects 
 they have.
 - To correctly say the words and use What subjects do you have today? - I 
 have ___. to ask and answer questions about school subjects.
 - To enhance the correct use of What subjects do you have today? – I have 
 ___. to ask and answer questions about school subjects in a freer context.
Competences - Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the 
 learning tasks.
 - Self-control & independent learning: perform listening tasks.
Attributes - Show their responsibility to follow the timetable and prepare their subjects 
 before school.

III. Warm-up and review – Look, listen and repeat – Listen, point and say –

Warm-up and review: 5 minutes
 - Greet the class.
 - Invite a few groups of pupils to the front of the class to say Whole 
 the chant on page 48. The class chants along and claps class/ 
 hands. Individual 
 - Ask pupils to open their books at page 50 and look at Unit work
 7, Lesson 1, Activity 1. Tell pupils what they will learn in 
 this lesson.
EXPLORATION
Activity 1. Look, listen and repeat. 5 minutes 
 c.
 A: What subjects do you have today?
 B: I have maths.

 A: What subjects do you have today?
 B: I have science.
c. Outcome Pupils can correctly say the words and use What subjects do you have 
 today? – I have ___. to ask and answer questions about school subjects.
d. Procedure Step 1: Ask pupils to look at Pictures a, b, c and d and 
 identify the names of the subjects.
 Step 2: Play the recording for pupils to listen to and repeat 
 the words under the pictures in chorus and individually until 
 they feel confident. Whole 
 Step 3: Draw pupils’ attention to the speech bubbles and class/ 
 elicit the missing word by pointing at Picture a. Play the Individual 
 recording for pupils to listen to and repeat the sentences in work
 both bubbles a few times.
 Step 4: Repeat Step 3 with Pictures b, c and d. Then let 
 pupils practise asking and answering questions in pairs. Go 
 around the classroom to offer help if necessary.
 Step 5: Invite a few pairs to point at the pictures and ask and Pair work
 answer questions about what subject they have today.

PRACTICE
Activity 3. Let’s talk. 8 minutes
a. Goal To enhance the correct use of What subjects do you have today? – I have 
 ___. to ask and answer questions about school subjects in a freer context.
b. Input – Picture cue: a boy and a girl talking about school subjects with four 
 textbooks (Vietnamese, English, maths, science) on a desk
 – Speech bubbles: What subjects do you have today?
c. Outcome Pupils can enhance the correct use of What subjects do you have today? – 
 I have on ____. to ask and answer questions about the school subjects in a 
 freer context.
d. Procedure Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture. Ask questions 
 to help them identify the context (see Input). Whole 
 Step 2: Elicit the missing words in the speech bubble and class/ 
 write them on the board. Get pupils to say the completed Individual 
 sentences. work
 Step 3: Put pupils into pairs to practice the exchanges. Go 
 around the classroom to offer support where necessary.
 Step 4: Invite a few pairs to point at the pictures and ask and Pair work
 answer questions about school subjects. If time allows, get a 
 few pairs to ask and answer questions about the real subjects 
 they have.

skills and answer questions about the subjects they have and tick or cross the 
 pictures.
 - To complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
 - To review the target vocabulary items using the puzzle, then ask and answer 
 questions about the subjects pupils have at school.
Competences - Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the 
 learning tasks
 - Self-control & independent learning: perform listening tasks
Attributes - Show their responsibility to follow the timetable and prepare their subjects 
 before school.

 previous lesson by inviting a few pairs of pupils to come to 
 the front of the class to ask and answer questions about what Whole 
 subjects they have, using What subjects do you have today? class/ 
 – I have_____. Individual 
 – Ask pupils to open their books at page 51 and look at Unit work
 7, Lesson 1, Activity 4.
EXPLORATION
Activity 4. Listen and check. 5 minutes
a. Goal To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils 
 ask and answer questions about the subjects they have and tick or cross the 
 pictures. 
 Step 2: Give pupils time to do the task independently. Go Individual 
 around the classroom to offer help where necessary. work
 Step 3: Get pupils to swap books with a partner and check 
 their answers before checking as a class. Nominate a pupil to Pair work
 write the answers on the board. Give further support to those 
 pupils who find it difficult to do the task. Whole 
 Step 4: Invite four pairs of pupils to act out four complete class/ Pair 
 exchanges in front of the class. Correct their pronunciation work
 where necessary.

PRACTICE
Activity 6. Let’s play. 8 minutes
a. Goal To review the target vocabulary items using the puzzle, then ask and 
 answer questions about the subjects pupils have at school.
b. Input A puzzle with four answer spaces and given letters as well as picture cues 
 and two speech bubbles
c. Outcome Pupils can review the target vocabulary items using the puzzle, then ask 
 and answer questions about the subjects pupils have at school.
 Key: 1. science 2. Vietnamese 3. maths 4. English
d. Procedure Step 1: Tell pupils the goal of the puzzle and how to play it. Group 
 Then have them look at the spaces in the puzzle and give work/Pair 
 letters as well as picture cues to find appropriate letters to work
 complete the words.
 Step 2: Give pupils a time limit to do the puzzle individually. 
 Go around the classroom and offer help if needed.
 Step 3: Have pupils work in pairs. One points at the Pair work
 completed words or the clues and asks What subjects do you 
 have today? and their partner answers I have _____.
 Step 4: Invite a few pairs to the front of the classroom to ask Group 
 and answer questions about what subjects they have today. work/Pair 
 work
